As a child in Colombia, Shakira was rejected from her school choir because her music teacher did not like her voice.
According to Shakira, the teacher felt her strong vibrato was too unusual, and her classmates teased her by saying she sounded “like a goat.” Shakira has spoken about this experience in multiple interviews over the years.
Instead of changing her voice, she continued singing. Her father encouraged her to embrace what made her different rather than trying to sound like everyone else. That same distinctive vibrato later became one of the most recognizable voices in music.
Shakira signed her first record deal as a teenager and went on to become one of the best selling Latin artists in history.
