Governor Alex C. Otti has approved a new monthly payment of stipends ranging from N250,000 to N350,000 for Traditional rulers in the state. Recall that in the past that they were paid as low as twenty five to fifty thousand. A testament to the fact that they were not valued.
The new wage is a recognition of their value and the significant roles they play in their various communities. . The pay rise is an encouragement for them to wake up to their traditional responsibilities since to whom much is given much is expected of him.
This decision made effective from December 2024 is aimed at recognizing the importance of traditional institutions in fostering peace and development in the community and state at Large. Additionally, the governor approved a N150,000 Christmas package for over 500 traditional rulers to support their festive celebrations. Traditional rulers in Abia State have expressed their profound gratitude to Governor Otti for the approval of the monthly stipends ranging from N250,000 to N350,000 for traditional rulers in the state.
In a press statement, Eze Linus Nto Mba, Chairperson of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, commended the Governor for this gesture, highlighting the respect and acknowledgment it shows toward the traditional institution.
“No former Governor in the state has so honored the traditional institution like Gov. Otti”, the statement read in part.
The traditional rulers prayed God “to give the Governor good health, sound mind, resources, more grace and wisdom to continue to pilot the affairs of the new Abia which every part of the state is already enjoying”.
The Chairman equally commended the Governor and reassured Governor Otti that the royal fathers are committed to assisting him in ensuring peace and tranquility reigned supreme in their domains and in dealing with criminal elements within their communities.
Describing Governor Otti’s relationship with traditional rulers as unprecedented, the monarchs commended the Governor’s friendly disposition towards them.
This move marks a significant shift from previous administrations, which were criticized for neglecting traditional rulers.
In time past, previous administrations paid little or no attention to the monarchs as traditional rulers have always complained about poor welfare package.

As of this year, there is now an increment in the stipends being paid as members of the Council of Traditional Rulers at the state level will now get an additional payment of N100,000 monthly.
“The same will apply to the Council of Traditional Rulers at the LGA levels. All these are to give pride of place to our traditional rulers who are partners in progress with the state government”
