The flood

Ezekiel Fajenyo

The flood ate out hearts,land
the flood swallowed our grains
and we have a pledge of dry dust.

The flood warned
but like the deaf, stubborn ears of killer politicians
we turned warnings to mocking grimace
and twisted advice to a meat for crocodiles

Our land is swept off
along with humans and huts into forgotten hells

Our waters got swollen with skeletons
of eaten lives by crocodiles
and broken muscles by violent pythons at noon
and crushed skulls by hippopotami at night.

The Niger wept
the Benue punched
the land lost its aged foot
into deadly depths of furious vampires
like lethal- laced manifestos of brutal kingpins
