Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks melanocytes (pigment-producing cells). This destruction results in distinct white patches or macules appearing on the skin, hair, and sometimes inside the mouth. It is not contagious and affects people of all skin tones, though it is usually more noticeable on darker skin.
